The main objective of the project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of an integrated gas-phase photocatalytic system using environmental and sustainable solar technology for the treatment of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) contaminants from automotive industry.

To develop and optimize this system, two different small experimental reactors are designed, built up and tested based on the two most appropriated solar concentration technologies: the parabolic trough collector and the parabolic dish collector; after their comparison in controlled and real conditions, the most suitable one is optimized and scaled to work in the factory.

From the scientific point of view, the project aims to provide the technical basis for the application of photocatalytic oxidation processes to accomplish the complete destruction of volatile and semi-volatile persistent organic toxic and hazardous pollutants in gaseous emissions. To develop this project we count on Ciemat as the scientific partner (owner of the attached picture).

This application is considered as an alternative post-treatment system for destruction of VOCs and light Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gaseous emissions from stationary sources as a catalytic end-of-pipe technology. Therefore, the ultimate achievement of the objective is attained if engineering-scale and on site tests can finally demonstrate the complete mineralization of organic pollutants and, if it is appropriate, photo-reactor and catalyst technology for continuous flow treatment are developed.
